Automatic storage systems for picking

In all the storage systems previously described, retrieval/deposit operations of entire load units can coexist with partial retrieval (picking) operations and, consequently, deposit of non-complete load units. These operations require high performance, specific handling systems, specific conveying solutions and particularly well-designed supervision software.Picking can be performed in two ways: goods to men or men to goods. In the first case the goods are taken from the stacker cranes and conveyed to the operators who remain at their work station. In the second case the stacker cranes supply shelving areas accessible to the operators, who move to perform the retrieval; these areas can be equipped in different ways according to the retrieval system and frequency, and can feature special systems to facilitate the operators in handling of the material retrieved (roller units, etc.).The first case requires automation with very high performance but maximises the efficiency of the operators who do not waste time moving from one place to another; furthermore the picking stations can be provided with specific equipment , such as piece counter balances, label printers, mechanical hands for retrieval of heavy material, carton closers, etc. Goods to men systems have been installed in which picking is performed fully automatically, by means of robotised systems. The second case requires fewer conveyors, permits more flexible use of human resources (a varying number of operators can work in the same storage area depending on retrieval requirements), and the retrieval points (picking channels) can be replenished at night; the disadvantage is that there is a limited number of picking channels and they can be insufficient for the number of articles to be handled. Mixed systems are obviously also produced, in which part of the material is managed men to goods and another part goods to men.
