The vertical storage systems are a particular type of automatic storage system which develop their storage capacity vertically. These storage systems, which have a modular structure, can reach heights of 12 metres and, in special cases, can even exceed 15 metres. The storage structure can be schematised as a tower, consisting of two opposed blocks of shelving separated by a vertical corridor in which the automatic retrieval equipment (truck) moves. The truck moves specific storage units (drawers) in which the materials are stored. The drawers are structured to permit easy division into compartments. The truck takes the drawers from the storage tower, deposits them in the operator's work area (the bay) for retrieval and/or deposit operations, then returns them to their storage position. The vertical storage systems differ depending on the model, also in terms of drawer width and depth, which range from 3,000 to 4,300 mm and from 650 to 850 mm respectively. The vertical storage systems are also characterised by the type of bay:
Internal bay : the machine is provided with an opening (inlet) which allows the operator to work on the drawer inside the vertical storage system. For obvious safety reasons, the machine is at a standstill when the operator performs the retrieval operations.
External bay: via a conveyor, the drawer is conveyed outside the machine. This type of bay facilitates retrieval, especially for heavy or cumbersome items.
Overlapped external bay: similar to the previous one, but having two conveyors, one on top of the other so that two drawers are moved simultaneously. This considerably increases performance, because the truck can move a second drawer while the operator is working on the first one. The drawers can have various capacities: 250, 500, 800 and 1,000 kg. Vertical storage systems can be produced for positioning outside buildings. The vertical storage control system consists of software characterised by a simple interface, large amount of information handled and possibility of connection with the company network and with the host computer. Vertical storage systems are used in all sectors, both industrial and otherwise, due both to their high-density storage capacity and extreme versatility, as they can be used for all types of non-palletised material: components, spares, accessories, small parts, tools, packaging, boxes, drugs, documents, books, clothing, bars, rolls etc.
